Combination living and dining room
There is, perhaps, no more radical change in our day to day living then the new use of space which has thrown the living room and dining room into one room. In this chapter let us consider both the dining room as a separate room and as a combination room. If you are altering a house, you may wish to make one larger room of the two you have, but if you wish to keep your dining room, but feel it is a bit shabby, redecorate it in the manner of today. The chances are that the furniture is still good, and to make an existing new room you may only need to use color; possibly by a rug, new wallpaper, curtains or seat pads. It is amazing how ideas can turn a shabby room into an attractive one at little or no cost.
Redecorating naturally takes a little thought and with most of us a little time as we have not the money to do everything at once. Therefore the important thing is to be pretty sure of the sort room we want, and work toward it. Pick up the new trends; don’t follow in the old treadmill. If you have good furniture of any type, give it a thorough soap and water cleaning and then wax and wax it. Paint dark walls one of the new clear yellows or blues, or, better yet, try a smart all over figured wallpaper; paint woodwork to harmonize; brighten up old chair seats with new slip covers in a solid color matching the color in the wallpaper; and dye your old rug if you do not wish to buy a new one. Take down old pictures placed here and there and follow one of the newer ways of hanging them.
